The Matchless Model X is a classic example of superior British pre-war engineering, combining durability and performance. Introduced in 1929, by 1938, the Model X had evolved into a well-proven machine, widely appreciated for its reliability and its ability to handle long-distance touring, sidecar work and even military applications in the years surrounding World War II.
At its heart is a 990 cc side-valve V-twin engine set at a 50-degree angle, designed to deliver smooth, tractable power. With a 4-speed gearbox the Model X was capable of around 120–130 km/h, though its true strength is its torque and steady performance. Its build quality and smooth-running engine made it particularly popular with riders who needed a dependable machine for heavy-duty use.
This particular example was sold from a dealer in the UK many years ago and has since been part of a small collection of important British Motorcycles. The Model X should be considered a project bike, though it benefits from a key advantage: the engine has been rebuild and runs very well, providing a solid mechanical starting point. The bike is currently fitted with a later AMC gearbox, but importantly, the correct Burman BAP gearbox is included, along with the original engine plates, allowing the machine to be returned to its proper 1938 specification.
In addition, a range of original components accompanies the bike but are not currently fitted. These include the handlebar, levers, clutch basket and new clutch plates, original battery rack, dynamo, complete steering damper, toolbox, speedometer drive, wiring harness, and rear brake rod. Together, these parts help to complete and correctly restore the motorcycle, or leave as is, in oily rag condition.
Overall, this 1938 Matchless Model X offers a rare combination: a characterful V-twin with a strong running engine, paired with the original parts required for a correct restoration or ‘oily rag’ rebuild.
When completed, the Model X will once again be the headturner that it so rightfully is.
