    M.vr.gr. Ben Looijen.

  • Visiting Nico Bakker.

Nico Bakker started in 1968 with racing on a ducati 250 cc just like theo bump in those days. Racing didn't go wrong, but Nico's heart went out more and more to the technique. He was not satisfied with the existing frames and started building one for himself. The Frame he built sent much better than the original, and so nico soon received requests from collegarijders to build one for them too. One thing led to another, and it only took a while, riders from all over the world came to nico over the floor to order a frame. That's how it started 40 years ago, and meanwhile nico has been self-employed for more than 35 years. For me reason enough to visit this man and see what this man is doing now.

Via mail contact with Nico and the deal is that we will visit Nico Bakker in heerhugowaard on Friday morning 13-08-2010 Tom Tom shows us the way, and by, we arrive at Nico's for his workshop. After two hours of driving, the legs are stretched out and we look around. A little cozy cottage with a workshop, nothing betrayal here on the outside that we are here at the world's most famous framebouwer. If we walk through the open door, we'll get right into the workshop and look around. It's already getting a little clearer where we are and an employee asks nicely "can I help you". we tell him we're coming for Nico and he brings us neatly to Nico who is full of work. The smell of metal and engine I used to know at school is still here. Even the appearance reminds me of old times. No robots or other digital stuff, but here's the real old-fashioned handicrafts.

Nico is on shore, it is holiday season and not all staff are present, so you come to a nice quiet time. There are several motorcycles that are half stripped because something changes or needs to be improved. Back in the corner is an under-construction BMW, I've never seen one of these. Nico says, this bike is built at the request of a customer. This customer has once seen this bike on a stock exchange but has never been put into production by BMW. The guy did have pictures and sketches and came to Nico with the question, can you build this for me? This is, of course, grist to Nico's mill and Nico explains, of course it costs a few pennies, but if you can reach with the price synchronized, you'll have the rest of it around and you can start building. I walk around the bike and look at the gas tank under construction. I can't believe how one plate of aluminum is knocked out of a tank.

Nico's wife calls through the workshop, coffee is ready, and together we walk to the cafeteria where Nico's wife pours coffee for everyone. We meet with the rest of the staff and enjoy the coffee starts the conversation, how can it be different, engines! Nico remembers how the big three of the Netherlands, boet, wants and jack were a huge commercial for him. When these guys were in their topdagen, they used frames or other parts of me. That's how I got a lot of demand for my frames because these three boys proved how fast you could use a bakkerframe around the corner!

Many stories pass through the in, and when the staff go back to work on their own, our conversation continues. There has been a lot of change in all these years, Nico, the Japanese are now building good frames themselves, so there is no more sandwich for me, at least not like then. But now the versatility of Nico comes upstairs. He is not only framebouwer but is just a metal worker in the widest sense of the word because he can make more, much more than just frames. Gietwielen, both for engines and cars, can aim perfectly. A Autowiel, which has just wall a curb, is perfectly directed by Nico. In the morning it is done again, because this is how Nico, the garage where the customer has brought the car, wants to get the car out of the car as soon as possible because the next car has to be on the bridge and the customer has to be able to Drive! For this purpose, Nico himself developed and built a machine. He tells with pride, sometimes wheels come in that have already been around the Netherlands, but most of them do not manage to target the wheel, and we are proud because we can do it!

In the meantime, I've turned a shaggy and I want to go outside and set this on fire. On the outside, Nico shows me in another barn. A baracuda he's still proud of, an old antique lawn mower with another cast-Iron Frame that he had to make a uitlaatje for. Here again proof that he can do more than frames. When my shaggy is up, we'll go back to the workshop, one of the employees put in Jack's winning engine. This bike still looks beautiful. Is he really that beautiful, I wonder, or is it because of the nostalgia that this engine brings? I have a lot of time to think, because in the meantime, a benelli 350 cc four-stroke is rolled in. I look out my eyes, this at first sight so quiet-looking workshop houses incredibly much nostalgia. There's a half-stripped motorcycle with a suzuki block up ahead. I don't recognize the type and Nico says smiling, here's only one in the world. This customer had the desire to have a motorcycle with the flexibility of a suzuki block and the seating position of a BMW GS. No problem. Nico's building it. This is the known type of frame where the framebuizen on the side walk along the block. This was created in the time I built frames for the endurance race tells Nico. At that time the blocks were even less engineering than now and the question then was: we should be able to replace the cylinderkop without having to build the block.

There's a box of raw castings up ahead. These are parts of a suspension of old racing cars that need to be restored. Nico gets this rough inside and edited everything with the CNC controlled spindle until all sizes are within the fabriekstolerantie, even here again turns out its versatility!

My surprise and admiration for this so quiet-looking man grows. Every employee knows his place and knows his job, it all seems to be going on like this. We move on and then come to something I really never expected here, a full aluminum gefreesde cylinderkop of a 50 cc parilla. The two small covers are neatly in the beautiful gefreesde bronze sessions. Nico sees my surprised face and says, these are nowhere for sale anymore and that's how this customer came here with the request if I could post this one! Also that is not a problem for Nico and while I study the beautiful copy again says one of Nico's employees, this one is better than the original head. Because it is made out of aluminum, it is less porous than a cast copy, the koelribben will tear down less quickly and if we are going to sandblasting it then you will see the difference with an original no more!

It's really incredible when you see what nico can make with his spindle. A Bakker for a Honda 125 cc racer from full aluminium milled with air intake for the airbox, rods for the achtervering of the bmw motorcycles in different lengths, hevelsystemen for the operation of a progressive achterveersysteem for various racers. Dear people, I've seen so much that I didn't expect. I went here with the idea of gathering information about the past and writing a story about it. Nico's enthusiasm and pride about his present is so great and my surprise is certainly no less that we can only get an end to this meeting. Every time I think I know enough for my story, Nico knows something new to come up with. Nico starts again, I was once called by the observatory from westerbork. Via via they came to my address and requested information on various types of aluminium, weight and tensile strength. What was the case: on top of these dishes, a steel house is mounted which is full of Electronics and other digital stuff. This has been so extensive over the last few years that the undercarriage on which this cabinet is on can no longer be able to handle the power, and one is looking for a lighter house in terms of pounds Nico hears the story and says, can I do a clothes for these closets? A long story short, the observatory near westerbork with all its electronics and digital equipment is housed in a Nico Bakker Closet!

Parts for classic cars that are no longer available are recreated with Nico as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world. Of course, there is a price tag on it, but it is more expensive than not. Nico is listed as framebouwer, but this man is now delivering a very wide range of products you can lick your fingers with!

No modern building, no fancy (expensive) lady at reception, but people with expertise and love for their profession. It is now clear to me why a framebouwer from the 2010 s can still be active in 2010 and, despite the recession, is still well standing.

Oh, my God. VR. GR. Ben Looijen.
